Small Spaces and Storage

When you move into a compact interior space your storage capacity (or lack of it) can become all consuming.  While we are seeing a strong influence of minimising possessions, we still have to find a home for our "stuff".  Looking at how people live all over of the world is certainly inspiring.

A trip to K Mart or Target and you'll find some clever little bits to get you started, but its the built in solutions that are going to be game changers.  I've found some inspiration and tips from the absolute lovers of great design....The Danes.

The Danish modernists wanted their furniture to change the way people live.  Hello Ikea!  There have been whole studies based how the Danish use shelves and storage.  Yes, that’s a thing!  Take Muuto for example.  They try to make stuff that is all not all the same kind of design.  It has a variation of design and function.  The future of interior design is in crafting things that have more than one use.  We face different problems today than we did yesterday.  Adjusting your interior to suit is fun, quirky and smart.  Working interiors can also be aesthetically beautiful.

Embrace decorative storage opportunities.

Open storage = easy access.  make the most of your entry and live in the space with ease.   As long as its kept neat, this idea is a winner.  When you enter and exit your space its a visula reminder of what you need.  Did somoneone say "where's the keys?"  nope...not here.

Sometimes perfection is simplicity, and Nisse Strinning’s String shelf is a prime example. After over 75 years, the String shelf feels as contemporary as ever.

Bathroom storage can be maximised if you keep the basin small and add a shaving cabinet and overheads in in the European laundry area.  Its tight but works.  Note that the colour pallatee is simple which adds to the appeal of a busy space.

When space is at a premium....build in.   The TV wall can be crammed full of your favourinte things and yet neat and tidy at the same time.

While bunks are a space saver, getting up to them is often frustrating.  I love this idea of the stairs.  Its visually interesting and feels like you just want to jump up there.  Stacking the beds into your holiday home never looked better.

And lastly...I'm mad for a drinks trolley.  Move them from inside to outside.  They are so versatile and this one....well what more can I say.  Its amazing.  you can pick one up at https://madebytait.com.au/product/trace-drinks-trolley/

Christmas Home

Christmas is our favourite time of year as it brings the chance to transform your home into a creative haven.  You don't have to spend a lot to get your Christmas cheer on.  Get out you paper, scissors and branches  ( rocks are not what we are going for here ) and transform your interior.

Sit down with a drink of whatever makes you happy and friends that do the same.  Get off social media and into doing, seeing and connecting with your inner creative.

Its so heart warming each year to unpack the decorations to find hand made objects amongst the trimmings.  You can add new designs to your Christmas decor stockpile every year and enjoy the process that goes along with transforming your home.

Use your favourite colour or follow the key trends in what's going down with interiors in 2018.  Popular accent colours are black forest, emerald green and watermelon red.  Both geometric and organic shapes are everywhere in interiors right now.  What’s really hot: Warm colours, natural stone, cacti, curved shapes, wicker, and cord.

Being authenitc and courageious is its own reward.  I can't say it more simply than that!  Merry Chirstmas and have a wonderful silly season.

We've collated some ideas below to get you started.

Outdoor Design

While we do love a great interior, the outside has to have a link.  A beautiful exterior is viewed from the inside of your home or apartment and you want to look out and appreciate the link between that the two spaces.  Improving your health and well being needn’t involve hours of stretching or meditating; you can create your own harmony within your outdoor space.

Keep you colour palette simple by using no more that three different colours and finishes.  Natural finishes look great.  You can add colour with accessories which can be easily changed if you get tired of the look.   It should look like you want to get out there and enjoy the fresh air and relax.  Minimise clutter and get your green finger on.

Create your own soul filled garden.  Think about growing some herbs, and having a space that a pet can co-exist in.  It can be a fun space, or a relaxing space but draw on some elements from your interior in the outdoor area.

Soulful gardens have a strong sense of feeling completely right and in balance. When we come upon these gardens, my first response is one of pure joy and my second is sadness knowing I have to leave.

Kitchen Love

When it comes to kitchens you really want to get it right!  Its such a big investment and a major selling point of your house.  What's the trick?  There probably isn't just one but keep in mind the kitchen is not an isolated room, it should reflect the entire interior.

Think about finishes in relation to everything else in the space.   If you have an idea of what you like, how do you interpret your picture into your space?   Where do the finishes go?  The most successful kitchens keep it simple.  Try to stick to only 2 or 3 finishes.  Think about using the bench top on the splash back for a seamless design.  The design and finishes should be resolved in unison.  When it comes to line - don't break it.  If there is a window, line cabinets up to suit.   Try a 700mm wide bench top over the standard 600.  Its looks so much better and gives you more allowance for the cook top.  Choose appliances first so that you have the exact specifications and dimensions for the designer to work with.

When it comes to design, we're seeing a trend in either really thin bench tops (6-10 mm) or really thick (80 mm).   We've seen the standard 20-40 mm bench tops used for about 30 years - it might be time for a change.

So what about those finishes? Matt is where its at.  Combine a nice stone with a matt finish and add some Metal like brass or brushed nickle tap ware.  Black looks sharp for trims like kick boards and finger pull details.  What's a finger pull you ask? Its the gap where you put your fingers in to open the cabinets.   You'll see some examples below - if you're using a more traditional handle try something amazing with a leather finish.

While modern streamlined kitchens are on the rise, there is a trend for the more traditional in the form of shaker cabinets and v grooved doors.  These look great when combined with a modern colour palate and nice stone bench top.

Think natural finishes, concrete,  marble, brass, steel, timber and you're on the right track. Or come see us at Concept Design Colour Finish and we'll draw up you kitchen and take you though a range of finishes that will work beautifully in your space.

Warm inviting design by David Flack Interiors - hand pick your marble.  When you have timber floors try using a 2 pac on the island so that you don't overload on timber.  It breaks up the kitchen.  If you have one design feature - don't compet wth it.  Let it talk.

All this talk of kitchens is making me hungry.  What we do in the kitchen is create food to serve the people we love.  Why not enjoy being in that space as you cook away.  It's a place to congregate, share your stories.  When I think about all of the great conversations  I had in my kitchen, it makes me nostalgic.  Give your kitchen a lift and enjoy.
