5 interior styling tips to beat the winter blues

Brr. There’s no denying the days are getting shorter and that morning chill is hanging around long into the afternoon. Winter normally signals a time to retreat indoors – and 2020 has already proven to be a very indoor kind of year (#isolife). Now is the perfect time to reassess your interior situation.

Here are some of our top tips to quickly refresh your interior and beat those winter and iso blues.

Add texture

The colder it gets, the warmer you want to be. Like an oversized sweater, this season is all about creating a comfortable, cosy space you’ll want to spend hours in. Texture – wool, felt, fleece and velvet – is perfect for achieving that warm, cosy feeling. Drape a thick, knitted throw over the sofa and add some rich velvet cushions for an instant winter sanctuary.

Layer it up

You know what goes hand in hand with texture? Layers, of course! Nothing screams warmth like layers. Start with a low-pile material (such as a linen bedsheet or leather sofa), then mix and match a variety of textures and patterns to create a rich, inviting space (remember, contrast is your friend here). The result? An irresistible winter hideout – hello Netflix binge, here we come!

Go for warm colours

Move over cool blue-greys; this year, it’s all about the warm colours. Think rich terracotta, mustard-y yellow and dusty pink. After all, creating an interior that’s both literally and visually warm is key. It’s not just about updating the soft elements, like the throws and rugs, either. Introduce different tones of a similar hue through art, coffee table books and vases to tie the entire space together and create a calming and inviting interior.

Add plants

If you can’t spend as much time outdoors in winter, why not bring the outdoors in? Now is the perfect time to introduce a new plant friend (or two) to help bring your interior to life (quite literally). Don’t worry if you’re not a green thumb, there are plenty of varieties – like the gorgeous devil’s ivy or snake plant – that are practically self-sufficient.

Mood and lighting

One of the most overlooked interior elements in a home is lighting. Combine a lack of good lighting with gloomy, dreary days and you have yourself the perfect recipe for a miserable winter. No fun. Introduce ambience to your home through floor lamps, table lamps and even pendant lighting, and top it off with some candles (scented of course) for that extra golden glow.
