4 reasons to use natural stone in your home

Our studio is a big believer in using natural stone. Not only does it offer a sense of authenticity, but it can also contribute to the colour texture and value of a property. Plus, there are plenty of different types of stone, so there’s no shortage of choices. In case you missed it, last time we did a write up on some of our favourite types of natural stone. This time we’re continuing with the stone theme to give you four reasons to consider natural stone in your home.

Unique and timeless

One of our favourite things about natural stones is how unique they are. Unlike the repetitive uniformity of engineered stone, natural stone’s varied appearance has a wonderful and charming character to it. Being nature’s creation, no two stones are identical, which means each application will lend itself to a truly distinct result.

Natural stones are also available in a beautiful spectrum of colours. For example, marble, while known for its contrast of black and white, also comes grey, maroon, gold, pink and even green. Likewise, granite comes in a wide variety of colours and can be flecked or pebbled in appearance. Not only is it beautiful with an amazing array of options to suit any interior style, it’s also timeless. This means that you won’t feel the need to replace it in a couple of years’ time as the trend won’t just fade away.

Versatile

Not only are there many types of different natural stone (some of which we highlighted in our last article), it also comes in a variety of colours, textures, shapes and sizes. This makes it one of the most versatile materials available for home design. Natural stone can also be integrated into virtually any style – from contemporary to traditional.

The sheer variety of available natural stones means that not only is there bound to be a natural stone to suit any design style, but it can also be used in almost any space. Unlike man-made or engineered stones, natural stone can also be used in three-dimensional settings such as columns, balustrades and even furniture pieces. It’s also damn good at withstanding the elements – which means outdoor applications are a go.

Durable and low maintenance

Want to know the secret to the Egyptian pyramids’ or statue of David’s longevity? Natural stone. Not only is the durability of natural stone such that it can outlast the lifespan of a building, but it can quite literally stand the tests of time.

Natural stones are naturally (pardon the pun) resilient to fractures and chips and can withstand a variety of conditions from heat to cold. In addition, these materials experience very little wear and tear and require only minimal maintenance. For example, marble and granite can be cleaned by simply wiping the surface with a damp sponge.

Value-add

Now we’re not real estate agents, so we can’t guarantee an exact dollar figure when it comes to how much value natural stone adds to your property. What we do know, however, is that buyers love kitchens and bathrooms. And those that feature natural stone are normally a huge draw card.

And it’s not only kitchens and bathrooms that benefit from natural stone’s ability to add beauty, permanence and value. Natural stone flooring can be a huge wow factor, while using it as wall cladding can add some serious street appeal – all factors that help sell a home.
