mid-century references, contemporary rooms

clean lines, softened geometry and expressive materials continue to make mid-century references useful to contemporary interiors. the intention is to draw from those qualities while responding to the home in front of us.

first published in july 2019, this archive brings together architecture, art and material references. our residential interior design work in melbourne considers such influences within a personal and cohesive design.

Stone house entrance with a vivid yellow door and stepping-stone path.

architecture and outlook

the house reference pairs natural stone with a clear yellow accent and broad glazing. the relationship between interior materials and the view beyond is as important as any individual furniture piece.

Assorted leafy plants in coloured pots against a muted green wall.

living form

a plant can offer an organic counterpoint to a room’s more defined lines. select for the available light, mature size and care requirements, then consider the planter as part of the material palette.

Mid-century timber furniture and indoor plants within a pale living room.

tiled table, dream green diy

the dream green diy reference combines a tiled surface with a simple timber frame. colour, grout and the grid of the tiles create pattern, while the table’s proportions determine how it sits within the furniture arrangement.

Framed geometric prints arranged on a timber sideboard.

paintings, bobby clark

the bobby clark reference explores balance through geometric compositions and muted colour. our art selection and commissioning service considers a work’s scale and personal significance alongside its setting.

Four rounded glass table lamps with slender brass-toned stems.

jube lamp, vistosi

the jube lamp introduces a layered glass form. a light fitting’s material and silhouette contribute to the room even when it is not illuminated, with its practical lighting role considered at the same time.

Grid of small square tiles in brown, cream and dark tones.

clay tiles, urban edge ceramics

the earth tile reference brings variation and warm tones to a repeated surface. review samples and set-out together, allowing the natural character of the finish to inform adjoining materials.

Sculptural green chairs with rounded cut-outs beside bright glazing.

sculpture, jane mckenzie

jane mckenzie’s sculptural forms offer a restrained reference through shape and surface. a quiet position with space around the work allows its geometry to be read clearly.

Close-up of multicoloured terrazzo with varied stone aggregate.

grigio terrazzo, cerdomus tile studio

the terrazzo reference combines contrasting aggregate within a grey ground. its pattern should be considered across the intended area, with transitions, finish and maintenance discussed before selection.

materials and finishes specification connects these references to the practical requirements of the project. the products shown belong to the original archive selection.
