wallpaper, considered
wallpaper can introduce a depth of pattern or texture that is distinct from painted walls. selected with the room’s architecture and materials in mind, it becomes part of the complete interior rather than an isolated feature.
from our essendon studio, we consider wallcoverings within interior decoration and styling for melbourne homes. four decisions help clarify their role.
pattern, texture and scale
a wallcovering’s repeat should relate to the size of the room and the distance from which it is seen. large-scale patterns can read differently across a full wall than on a small sample.
consider the colour and texture alongside furniture, flooring and artwork. a quieter surrounding palette can give a more expressive surface room to be appreciated.
plan the application
surface preparation, pattern matching and installation are part of the specification. material costs alone do not describe the complete scope, particularly for textured or specialist wallcoverings.
confirm quantities and installation requirements with the supplier and installer before ordering. the nursery featured in our original 2020 article illustrates how a wallcovering can establish a room’s character.
consider the architectural setting
a ceiling, recess or joinery interior may offer another place for a wallcovering, where the particular product is suitable. its application should respond to the room’s proportions and the surfaces around it.
confirm substrate compatibility and any relevant product requirements rather than assuming every paper can be used on every surface.
match the material to its use
paper, vinyl and textile wallcoverings have different care requirements. washability, resistance to moisture and suitability for high-traffic rooms must be checked for the specific product.
wallpaper is not automatically waterproof or suitable for a wet area. our materials and finishes specification considers these limitations alongside the desired colour, texture and architectural expression.
