small shifts within the interior

sometimes an interior needs a small shift rather than a new collection of furniture. a familiar object in a different position, a clearer arrangement or a change in texture can reveal another aspect of the room.

these ideas, first published in june 2020, begin with what is already there. our interior decoration and styling work in melbourne brings existing pieces and new selections into a considered relationship.

reconsider the arrangement

look at a shelf or console as a whole before adding anything. vary the height and shape of objects, and leave enough space for individual pieces to be understood. books, ceramics and personal objects can create depth without filling every surface.

a change of position may be enough. retain pieces for their meaning and usefulness, rather than replacing them simply to create a new look.

give art its place

an artwork should be considered in relation to the wall, neighbouring furniture and the view through the room. experiment with position and scale before deciding whether another piece is needed.

our art selection work includes collaboration with artists and the commissioning of pieces for a particular setting. an art collection can evolve over time, with each addition chosen for its own connection to the home.

layer colour and texture

a textile can introduce a softer surface or pick up a tone already present in stone, timber or art. use samples to see whether the addition connects with the existing palette under the room’s light.

the aim is a coherent interior with room for personal character. colour consultation can help resolve these relationships without relying on a seasonal trend or a larger change.
