a material with natural character

natural stone brings a particular depth to an interior: movement, texture and colour formed over time. selected with care, it can establish the character of a room and connect its architecture with the smaller details of daily life.

in our melbourne interior design practice, we consider stone alongside joinery, lighting and the way a space will be used. these four qualities explain its enduring place in residential interiors.

individual character

each slab has its own composition. veining, tonal shifts and mineral markings give a surface an identity that cannot be repeated exactly. a quiet limestone may bring continuity; a richly patterned marble can become the focal point of a room.

we select slabs in the context of the whole material palette, considering their relationship with timber, metal and fabrics. the aim is a balanced interior whose appeal extends beyond a passing trend.

continuity through the home

stone can connect a kitchen island with a fireplace, vanity or threshold. varying its finish and scale allows the material to recur without every application feeling the same.

its suitability depends on the stone and setting. detailing a curved island, integrated basin or outdoor surface calls for early collaboration with the supplier, fabricator and builder, so the design respects the material’s capabilities.

longevity with considered care

a well-chosen stone can remain part of a home for many years. durability varies, however: marble and limestone are sensitive to acids, and some surfaces are more prone to staining or scratching than others.

we consider maintenance as part of the specification. ask the supplier about sealing, suitable cleaners and care for the particular stone and finish. a material’s patina should suit both the design and the way its owners live.

a lasting architectural presence

natural stone gives weight and definition to architectural details, from a restrained hearth to a sculptural island. its value lies in how thoughtfully it is used, rather than in quantity or a promise of resale returns.

our materials and finishes specification brings these decisions together with the wider interior. working from our essendon studio, we coordinate stone selections with bespoke joinery design and the other elements that make a home cohesive.
